Celebrating 10 Crus Bourgeois du Médoc Official Selections & Looking to the Future
Since the 2008 vintage, a selection of wines from Bordeaux’s famous Médoc area have been granted Cru Bourgeois status according to the Official Selection rules which were established in 2009. On average around 250 wines have attained Cru Bourgeois status each vintage. This year, the Crus Bourgeois du Médoc celebrate the 10th vintage under this system with the unveiling of the 2017 Crus Bourgeois du Médoc Official Selection.
Next year, when the 2018 Crus Bourgeois du Médoc Official Selection is unveiled, the system will evolve to a 3-tier structure, with Cru Bourgeois, Crus Bourgeois Supérieur and Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel levels, and Cru Bourgeois status will be granted for 5 years. This new classification will be based on a tasting assessment of 5 previous vintages since 2008 and a specific application for the higher categories.
To mark this important turning point, the Crus Bourgeois du Médoc will do something different at the annual London Tasting, this year on 26th September 2019. A selection of around 30 wines from the new 2017 Crus Bourgeois du Médoc Official Selection will be shown, and, in addition, to celebrate 10 years of Cru Bourgeois Official Selections, around 30 Cru Bourgeois wines from previous vintages since 2008 will be shown, all currently available in UK retailers for consumers to buy.
