Tokara

When GT and Anne-Marie Ferreira purchased the farm on the foothills of the Simonsberg Mountain in 1994, all they had in mind was to build a lovely family home among the beautiful old trees. They began to carve out their new future on the farm they named TOKARA, after their children, Thomas and Kara.

GT Ferreira soon realized that the farm was situated on some of the best wine grape-growing soils in the region since his illustrious neighbors were already producing some of the best wines in the country. Being a formidable businessman he made the decision to venture into the wine industry in 1999 and so the process started to create one of the most breathtaking wineries in the Cape Winelands. The single-minded vision from the outset was to establish TOKARA as a producer of world-class wines.

On visiting the winery you will be greeted with the scents of indigenous fynbos gardens and beautiful sculptures by various South African artists. The Ferreira family are patrons of contemporary South African art and their collection adorns the entire estate. Works of art are strategically placed along a winding pathway leading through the olive orchards to the Delicatessen, where the TOKARA Extra Virgin Olive Oil is made. It is also home to the Deli, a welcoming family restaurant that serves breakfast and light lunches.

Alternatively, follow the stairs of concrete and stone to the winery where you will find the Wine Tasting Lounge, The TOKARA Restaurant, and a carefully curated art collection. Greeted by spectacular views you will also be able to share in the winemaking process as the Wine Lounge allows candid views of the fermentation cellar. Visitors are spoilt for choice with a variety South Africa / Stellenbosch A story of rolling vines and olive groves Tokara: of wine tastings, including the rare opportunity to sample the estate’s 10-year-old potstill brandy, as well as a tutored olive oil tasting. Or just sit back, enjoy the African sun with a glass of bubbly, and savor the moment.

TOKARA produces incredible red wines based on Cabernet Sauvignon, one of the cornerstone varieties of the estate and one that has been part of the winery since the first harvest in 2000. Together these wines represent a true reflection of everything the estate stands for: refinement, elegance, and balance. Their interpretation of Cabernet Sauvignon incorporates two singular expressions, a flagship blend, and the pinnacle cuvée, TELOS 2015. The epitome of precision, this super-premium Cabernet Sauvignon is the culmination of almost two decades of absolute focus in the vineyards and the cellar to raise the bar for South African pinnacle wines. TELOS was launched in London in June 2018 to rave reviews from Masters of Wine and leading UK wine trade.

Sauvignon Blanc from two diverse vineyard sites is another focus variety. Grapes are sourced from high-lying vineyards in Stellenbosch as well as TOKARA’s prized property in Elgin. This vineyard site is located in an area highly acclaimed for producing some of the best cool climate Sauvignon Blancs. These wines are in perfect balance with fresh acidity and purity of fruit.

The estate focuses on two Bordeaux varieties in its Director’s Reserve range. The Reserve Collection showcases the unique attributes of terroir-specific, single-vineyard wines in limited volumes, including Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. These four signature grape varieties are also available in the more fruit-driven, accessible, and lifestyle-focused estate range.

“A bottle of wine encapsulates the vision, reality and circumstance of a particular place and time. It tells a great story if you take the time to listen,” says winemaker Stuart Botha. He recommends drinking the top tier whites after a year to 18 months from vintage and the reds from four years and up to 15 years, as they will continue to improve gracefully with careful cellaring.

TOKARA’s vision of producing world-class wines necessitates an exact focus with no room for compromise and the dedicated team always strives towards this goal. Being included in the 2018 list of Most Admired Wine Brands in the World by Drinks International magazine echoes this commitment.
