The Seventh Edition of the World’s Best Wine Lists

By The World of Fine Wine Team

The World’s Best Wine Lists 2020 is open for entries and there are several significant developments to share as the esteemed awards program enters its seventh year.

Widely considered as the sommelier version of Michelin stars, the World’s Best Wine Lists awards are the most rigorous and prestigious accolades of their kind in the industry. They are organized by the multi-award-winning publication, The World of Fine Wine, which assembles an independent panel of prestigious international wine experts to judge the entries. Successful lists are awarded one, two, or three stars, and there are also regional and global winners in 16 different categories, including Best Long, Medium, Short, and Micro, Best Wine-by-the-Glass (With and Without Coravin), Best Champagne and Sparkling, Best Fortified, Best Hotel, and Best Wine Bar.

This year, TEXSOM co-founder, James Tidwell MS has been appointed to the Senior Judges panel. He will be joining long-standing members: Andrew Jefford, Ch’ng Poh Tiong, Andreas Larsson, Elin McCoy, Alder Yarrow, Francis Percival and chairman of the judges, Neil Beckett.

Accepting the invitation to join the panel, James Tidwell commented, “Neil Beckett and fellow judges have created the most relevant and respected wine list awards in the world, the results of which demonstrate unparalleled excellence. I am honored and excited to join the preeminent wine list awards as a judge. I have admired The World of Fine Wine’s World’s Best Wine Lists awards since its inception for the quality of judges, thorough selection process, and rigorous standards. Working with the tenured judges in identifying and promoting the world’s best wine lists is an incredible honor.”

The winners of WBWL star awards will be announced this September at a live awards ceremony in London, UK. All regional category winners will also be presented with their certificates, and global category winners with their trophies. The awards ceremony has become a highlight in the global wine calendar, not least because of the support from its highly esteemed sponsors who enhance the occasion by offering exclusive fine wine tastings and demonstrations on the evening.

The World of Fine Wine is proud to announce Coravin as the headline sponsor for the 2020 World’s Best Wine Lists.

Greg Lambrecht, founder and owner of Coravin, said, “We are very excited to be the Headline Sponsor and it’s truly our intention together with The World of Fine Wine to make this partnership a success for many years to come.”

Welcoming the sponsorship, Neil Becket commented, “Ever since its launch in 2013, Coravin has revolutionized the way fine wine is consumed, and the restaurant world has benefited greatly from this game-changing wine-preservation tool. As sommeliers have embraced Coravin around the world, the judges at WBWL have observed with great enthusiasm how wine-by-the-glass offerings have been transformed, becoming ever more diverse, exciting, and inventive. The world’s leading wine producers and trade professionals share my very high regard for all that Coravin is doing to promote broader and easier access to fine wine. I could not be more delighted to welcome Coravin as our Headline Sponsor in what I regard as the perfect partnership for the World’s Best Wine Lists, and together, with our shared values, we will take great strides in making the awards better and more relevant than ever.”

English wine producer, Gusbourne, and Franciacorta producer, Berlucchi, are among those joining as Gold Sponsors of the 2020 awards, adding extra sparkle this year.
