The Santa Margherita Wine Group has become the majority shareholder in Cà Maiol, a real flagbearer for the Lugana D.O.C., of which it has been one of the star producers for the last thirty years. Fabio Contato, the entrepreneur who has headed up the Desenzano del Garda-based winery during its expansion over the last few years, will remain in the company as Chairman of the new Board of Directors.
With this acquisition, the Santa Margherita Wine Group reinforces its leadership in the white wine segment, by entering into a Denomination that is showing great growth, as well as having a very high quality profile.
Cà Maiol brings with it 140 hectares of vineyards, divided up into four distinct “cascine” (“farms”), the oldest of which, founded at the beginning of the eighteenth century, gives its name to the entire estate. Launched in 1967 with initial plantings of just 12 hectares, this winery in Lombardy has taken on – in terms of size, bottles sold and markets opened up around the world – a leading role in the Denomination as a whole, making Lugana one of Italy’s best-known and most sought-after white wines.
There have been a large number of international accolades in recent years for Cà Maiol, whose current production is over 1.5 million bottles, with expected turnover in 2017 of around 10 million Euros.
“Lugana – underlines Gaetano Marzotto, President of the Santa Margherita Wine Group – is a Denomination that has succeeded in conquering an important position among Italian white wines. Cà Maiol and Fabio Contato have been undisputed protagonists in this success, which must now carry on, by increasing even more the number of markets where the estate’s wines are sold and consolidating the results that have already been achieved. This is a wine, and a region, that we feel very close to: we have followed its progress carefully over the years, and we can see great potential for it. We want to bring to this new Denomination of ours all of our know-how, so as to establish even further its position as a protagonist on a global scale”.
“A businessman’s sense of responsibility must go beyond the present moment: he must seek to have a long-term vision for his company. This is even more true for those who, like us, have brought about international success for their winery and indeed their whole Denomination”, Fabio Contato emphasizes. “Today Cà Maiol and the Lugana D.O.C. are well-known, enjoyed and asked for all over the world, thanks to our strong commitment to uncompromising quality. We must, though, look towards the future and at the competitive scenario that exists in the world of wine, where an ever-growing number of international players makes things difficult for any company like ours, which – relatively speaking - is still rather small. I have found in the Marzotto family, and in the Santa Margherita Wine Group, the ideal partners for carrying on our process of growth.”
As Ettore Nicoletto, CEO of the Santa Margherita Wine Group emphasizes: “With this acquisition, our Group reinforces its role as a scout for Italian regions with great potential as well as its presence in Lombardy, a Region that is becoming increasingly important on the national wine scene. We are also confirming our vocation for – and attention to – white wines, in which field our Group has always been one of the leading players. The Santa Margherita Wine Group adds another tile to its winemaking mosaic, which already sees it present in Italy’s finest wine-producing regions: from the Alto Adige to the Eastern Veneto; from the hills of Conegliano-Valdobbiadene to Franciacorta; and from Chianti Classico to the Maremma and Sicily. For the Lugana Denomination, a new phase of growth will now begin, which will be of benefit to the whole of the local economic system”.
