Gerard Basset OBE has added yet another attribute to his ever-increasing list of accolades with the Master in Science in Wine Management from the OIV (Organisation de la Vigne et du Vin / International Organisation of Vine and Wine). He was conferred this latest award at a ceremony in London last week attended by both the Director of the OIV MSc, Nicolas Goldschmidt, and the creator of the OIV MSc, Michel Bourqui.
Joining an elite group of some 500 International alumni, Basset stands out for his extraordinary achievements in wine. He remains the only person in the world to hold the Master of Wine, Master Sommelier and Wine MBA titles simultaneously and the achievement of the MSc from the OIV further strengthens his position as one of the wine world’s most revered experts.
Basset celebrated with a private dinner hosted by his former protégé, Xavier Rousset MS, at the recently opened Cabotte, where guests were regaled with anecdotes from his career, not least that he struggled to pass his WSET Diploma, receiving a conditional pass in year one, proving that even the greats have had to strive for their success.
Speaking about his latest achievement, Basset comments, “I have always been motivated to know more about my industry. The world of wine is ever-evolving, it is important to keep learning and I find that following high level wine programs/courses such as the OIV MSc is a great way to do so. In addition, I absolutely love the challenge that high level wine courses and examinations brings on oneself. I must add that I am extremely lucky to have the wonderful support of my wife Nina to help me take on all those challenges over the years.”
OIV MSc Director, Nicolas Goldschmidt adds, “For 30 years the OIV MSc in Wine Management has prepared some great talents to drive the agenda for the global business of wine. Each year, the 15 participants to the OIV MSc travel together to 25 countries around the world to meet some of the most representative wine professionals (producers, importers, distributors, promotional bodies, press, consultants…) and follow courses of management. Our alumni benefit from an exceptional network and become business leaders, holding senior management positions around the world. Gerard joins an elite alumnus and we are honored to bestow this achievement on him today.”
Gerard Basset OBE, MW, MBA, MSc, MS found fame as co-founder of the Hotel du Vin Group, becoming the ASI World Champion Sommelier in 2010 and in 2011 was awarded the OBE for Services to Hospitality. He remains the only person in the world to hold the Master of Wine, Master Sommelier and MBA simultaneously.
