The Source at MONA

By Alex Hunt MW

Serving contemporary French food and a robust wine list in a stylish art museum restaurant with water views, the wine list at The Source at MONA – the Museum of Old and New Art – is an artwork in its own right. It features more than 10,000 bottles from around the world, sourced from small, artisanal producers as well as the bigger and better-known.

The Source has traditionally been part of the cellar door experience at Moorilla Winery and now is part of the fabric of MONA, Tasmania’s biggest tourist attraction. Their partnership with Moorilla sees a full page of sparkling, red and white wines from Moorilla’s two vineyards – Tamar and Derwent Valley – produce remarkable cool-climate wines.

Wine director Pip Anderson is on hand to provide expert knowledge and steer guests towards a suitable wine to enjoy while taking in the exquisite surrounding landscape, where beautiful views of the Derwent River give way to a backdrop of Mount Wellington and Collinsvale range. The wine list is far-reaching and extensive; including a large half bottle section with a strong influence from Austria and Germany seen in the Riesling selection; a comprehensive range of European varieties particularly from Burgundy; and a significant Champagne and sparkling wine selection, where a 20th Anniversary Pipers River Tasmanian sparkling wine can elevate any occasion.

Vince Trim, who was promoted from executive sous chef to executive chef in 2016, heads up the kitchen, drawing upon the excellent fresh Tasmanian produce to create an inspiring and modern menu to accompany the wine list.

The Source already holds a number of accolades to its name, having won Gourmet Traveller’s Wine List of the Year (Tasmania) three years running (2013, 2014, 2015) and Best Beer List (National, 2015), plus the 2015 Wine Spectator ‘Best of Award of Excellence’.
