Bistro Moncur

By Thierry Dessauve

French bistro classics given a subtle modern Australian spin are the order of the day at Bistro Moncur in the Woollahra Hotel in Sydney’s eastern suburbs.

Head chef Sam Kane’s menu includes reliably delicious signature dishes such as duck confit with caramelized onion tart tatin, shimeji mushrooms, Brussels sprouts, and foie gras; or Persian feta-spiced carrot and mint tortellis with green pea velouté.

The wine list, meanwhile, complements the style and tone of the restaurant perfectly, offering a compact but well-chosen range of top Aussie and Kiwi bottles supplemented with a sprinkling of interesting Old World names.

Arranged by variety, the list offers Pinot Noir fans both Rippon Mature Vines from Central Otao and Benjamin Leroux Volnay alongside Derwent in Tasmania and Sidewood in the Adelaide Hills, while Syrah/Shiraz lovers could choose from Georges Reynaud in Crozes-Hermitage or Wild Duck Creek Estate in Heathcote Victoria.

Concluding with a handful of fine wines including Henschke Hill of Grace, Penfolds Grange, DRC Richebourg, and Château Mouton-Rothschild 1989, Bistro Moncur’s list is short but smart.
