The wine list at the two-Michelin-starred Atrio in Cáceres, Extremadura, has a lot going for it. For a start, it is beautifully and clearly presented, full of genuinely informative notes and background material on the world’s wine regions; it’s a pleasure to read and browse from.
Or, as the judges at the World’s Best Wine Lists 2015 put it, “Atrio’s list immediately strikes you as being a beautifully designed book (that one would happily display on one’s coffee table) rather than a wine list. It contains explanations, history, and original photography—it’s a special list.”
More importantly, of course, it also contains some great wines, a superb spread of top Spanish producers including multiple vintages from great Rioja estates, and a no less intelligent choice of French and global bottles. In summary, it’s a worthy match for the locally influenced, honest, but refined menu created by Juan Antonio “Toño” Pérez.
