World’s Best Wine Lists Revealed

By Thierry Dessauve

The World of Fine Wine has announced the winners of its inaugural World’s Best Wine Lists, awarding 322 establishments with the prestigious three star award.

This year the three star ranking has been presented to more premises than ever before, an increase on last year’s total of 300. New York topped the list with 46 commended establishments, followed by London with 23.

The overall winner of the World’s Best Wine List was Robuchon au Dome, housed in Hotel Lisboa, one of Macau’s most distinctive pieces of modern architecture. Home to over 12,700 different labels, the wine list has been described by the panel of judges as “a 585-page masterpiece.”

The awards celebrate the importance of a good selection of wine from around the world and are assessed by a panel of senior judges including Alder Yarrow, Elin McCoy, Ch’ng Poh Tiong, Andrew Jefford, Andreas Larsson, Francis Percival and World of Fine Wine Editor Neil Beckett. This year they were also joined by Chef Daniel Humm and Wine Director Cedric Nicaise from Eleven Madison Park, the winners of the World’s Best Wine List in 2015. The panel assessed over 4,500 wine entries before narrowing them down to a final list of 817.

Neil Beckett said: “We had a huge number of wine lists submitted this year and each wine list underwent numerous stages of judging and rigorous assessment. We are particularly pleased to have had these special new awards decided in their debut year by Chef Daniel Humm and Wine Director Cedric Nicaise of Eleven Madison Park, who have identified among their peers and their personal recommendations of lists that have a strong identity as well as sheer star quality.”

The awards are now in their third year and are “rapidly becoming as coveted as Michelin Stars”, according to World Sommelier Champion Gerard Bassett.
